What We Do Success Stories
Safaa Hajir, a recent Vocational Nursing graduate, embodies perseverance and determination. Her achievement represents far more than the attainment of a certificate—it is the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream. Safaa’s journey began in Lebanon, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in history. Like many, she envisioned a clear path for her future. However, life often takes unexpected turns. In 2013, she relocated to the United States, embarking on a new chapter in El Paso, Texas—a chapter marked by unfamiliar faces, experiences, and cultural challenges. One of her greatest obstacles upon arrival was the language barrier. Everyday communication felt daunting; expressing herself, seeking assistance, and engaging in simple conversations were overwhelming tasks. Securing employment seemed unattainable—not due to a lack of capability, but because opportunities were scarce.
To provide for her family, Safaa worked in a factory for minimum wage while raising two children as a single mother. The work was physically demanding, and the emotional toll was immense. There were moments of doubt and fear, yet surrender was never an option. Her unwavering resolve was fueled by the two young lives depending on her.
Determined to create a better future, Safaa pursued further education and earned a phlebotomy certificate. During her clinical training, a patient recognized her passion and inquired about her aspirations. When Safaa shared her dream of becoming a nurse and her inability to qualify for financial aid, that conversation led her to Project ARRIBA—a turning point that transformed her life.
Project ARRIBA provided more than financial assistance; they offered belief and support. Through their program, Safaa completed her prerequisite courses, received tuition assistance, and benefited from childcare support, enabling her to balance motherhood and academic responsibilities.
Today, Safaa stands as a graduate and a testament to the power of opportunity. Her story illustrates that resilience and determination can overcome even the most formidable challenges.
Safaa extends heartfelt gratitude to her children, her greatest source of motivation. Every late night of study and every exam was for them—to ensure they had someone to rely on and a future filled with promise. She also expresses profound appreciation to Project ARRIBA for their unwavering support and encouragement during her journey. Her message to fellow graduates is clear: challenges, language barriers, and financial hardships do not define one’s potential. Success is determined by perseverance and the will to thrive. As the Class of 2025 embarks on the next chapter, Safaa urges them to carry empathy, strength, and gratitude forward, reminding us that sometimes the most compassionate caregivers are those who once needed healing themselves.
Safaa also acknowledges Mrs. Vikki Rey, her dedicated case worker, for her guidance and responsiveness throughout the process. She extends thanks to Roman Ortiz, President & CEO of Project ARRIBA, Sam Correa, Aliya Hernandez, and all staff and donors whose contributions made this achievement possible.
Congratulations to the Class of 2025—a celebration of resilience, growth, and the limitless possibilities that lie ahead.
