Success Story: The Journey of Kassandra Trillo
Kassandra Trillo’s path to graduation stands as a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering belief that a better future is always worth fighting for. For six years, she had built a stable and fulfilling career with the Socorro Independent School District. She loved the work—its familiarity, its steadiness, its sense of purpose. Yet, beneath that comfort lived a deeper truth: she wanted more for her children and for herself. Motivated by equal parts courage, nerves, and a spark of hope, she made a single phone call to El Paso Community College—a call that would change the direction of her life.
What Kassandra could not have predicted was that her educational journey would unfold in the midst of some of the most challenging moments of her life. As she began her program, she found herself caring full‑time for her beloved grandfather, who was battling dementia and severe kidney complications. At the same time, she was raising three children while navigating a difficult custody battle for her two oldest. Sleepless nights, constant medical appointments, and the emotional toll of watching a loved one decline made academic success feel out of reach. Yet it was during this storm that Kassandra found Project ARRIBA—a support system that offered guidance, stability, and the reassurance that she did not have to walk her path alone.
Her world shifted again when she lost her grandfather at the beginning of the year. He had been her safe place, her motivation, and one of the greatest influences in her life. Grief weighed heavily on her, yet she continued forward, determined to honor his memory by finishing what she had started. At the same time, her youngest child faced his own struggles with hearing loss, requiring specialist visits, tests, and surgery—another emotional battle layered on top of already demanding responsibilities. Through it all, her child’s bravery fueled her own, reminding her of the strength she carried even when she doubted it.
As Kassandra entered her final semester, life dealt yet another blow: the end of her marriage. Balancing coursework while navigating personal upheaval pushed her to the edge, and quitting sometimes seemed easier than continuing. But each time she considered stepping back, she remembered the reasons she began—her children’s future, her grandfather’s legacy, and the dream she refused to let go.
Thanks to the profound support from Project ARRIBA—especially her mentor, Estela Flores—alongside the unwavering love of her parents, the encouragement of close friends, and the inspiration drawn from her children, Kassandra found the strength to persevere. Every late night, every tear, every moment of uncertainty became proof of her grit and her capacity to rise above adversity.
Today, her graduation is more than an academic achievement—it is the culmination of courage, sacrifice, and an unshakeable commitment to building a better life. Kassandra’s story reflects not only personal triumph but the collective power of community, faith, and relentless determination. Her journey reminds all who hear it that hardships do not define a person; rather, they shape the strength with which they rise.
As she stands among the Class of 2025, her story shines as a remarkable example of what it truly means to fight for a dream—and win. Congratulations to Kassandra Trillo, whose perseverance continues to inspire all who have been part of her journey.
“She has worked very hard to make this happen for herself and her family. Despite all the bumps on the road and obstacles life threw her way, giving up was never an option. After the long clinical hours, the long study nights she never lost focus on all her responsibilities and commitments. Most importantly, she has set a true example for her children to always keep pushing forward and work hard for their goals. I am so proud of you, Kassandra, and from here on forward your life is going to change, all for the best.”
