Jose Giner-Grajeda

Jose Giner-Grajeda was born in El Paso, Texas, but raised in Mexico—a life shaped by the unique experience of growing up along the border. His journey to becoming a nurse is a testament to perseverance, sacrifice, and the power of opportunity.

From the age of 12, Jose’s days began before sunrise. Each morning, he crossed the international bridge at 6:00 a.m. to attend school in the United States. His routine involved daily border crossings followed by two bus rides to reach class. Through freezing mornings, rainy days, and even snow, he remained committed to his education. This demanding schedule continued through middle school, high school, and into college. When college coursework intensified, Jose made the difficult decision to rent a small apartment near campus, sharing a two-bedroom, one-bathroom space with four roommates. It was far from easy, but necessary to keep moving forward academically. During his nursing studies at UTEP, a classmate, Lizzeth Terrazas, introduced him to Project ARRIBA and encouraged him to apply. Once accepted into Phase Two of the nursing program, Jose became a Project ARRIBA participant and began receiving sponsorship.

Initially, nursing school was financially overwhelming. Tuition payments, deadlines, and compliance requirements created constant stress. Jose worked extra hours and took side jobs to stay enrolled, fearing that one missed payment could derail years of effort. Project ARRIBA changed that reality. Their support—covering tuition, books, uniforms, and compliance costs—gave him something invaluable: time. Time to focus on his studies instead of worrying about finances. Weekly encouragement at VIP meetings further strengthened his resolve.

Project ARRIBA didn’t just help Jose pay for school—they helped him stay in school. Around the same time, Jose faced another challenge: unreliable technology. The laptop loaned by UTEP frequently restarted during critical moments, including proctored exams. On multiple occasions, he had to rush to the library mid-exam to find another computer, losing precious time and adding stress. When he shared his struggles with Ms. Mimi, she immediately took action, connecting him with Workforce Solutions Borderplex and Ms. Alma. Within hours, arrangements were made for Jose to receive a new laptop—a resource that transformed his academic experience. With reliable technology, he could complete exams without interruptions, submit assignments on time, and focus fully on learning. This opportunity is something Jose will never forget. That laptop became an essential tool, supporting his academic success and confidence. It will continue to serve him as he pursues his master’s degree and, potentially, a doctorate. For Jose, graduation represents far more than earning a degree. It symbolizes stability, sacrifice, and a dream fulfilled—not only for himself but for his family. His achievement will stand as proof that every early morning, every border crossing, and every hardship was worth it. He will be the first nurse in his family, breaking cycles and opening doors that once seemed out of reach.

Looking ahead, Jose’s goal extends beyond personal success. He aspires to give back—to serve border communities, under-served populations, and students navigating education while facing financial and personal challenges. He hopes to mentor future nursing students, especially first-generation and bilingual learners, showing them that their background is a strength, not a limitation.
